Not because they are compromising with capital — compromises with capital have been a central part of classical social democracy as well — but because they surrendered to capital. They forgot that in order to make compromises you need at least two things: a direction – so that you know where you are heading and how compromises get you in that direction; and strength – that is, an organized and self-conscious working class. The Third Way social democrats actively disengaged and demobilized their working class bases.”

Volgerns de auteur gaat het niet over een keuze tussen ‘socialisme’ en ‘kapitalisme’ aangezien deze twee vormen nooit in zuivere vorm bestaan, maar over een verstandige keuze voor een hybride systeem.
Want waar het over gaat is de verdediging van de belangen van werkende mensen.
